The Dirty Truth about Mascara, Eyeliner and Eye shadows

What Ever You Do, DON'T RUB YOUR EYES!

I recently learned that several brands of mascara, had been found by EWG to have thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in vaccines and sometimes found in cosmetics. As EWG puts it:

"According to the FDA, 'Mercury compounds are readily absorbed through the skin on topical application and tend to accumulate in the body. They may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or neurotoxic manifestations.' Mercury is considered particularly toxic to the developing brain during pregnancy, infancy and childhood. FDA has banned the use of mercury compounds in all cosmetics except those used around the eyes."

Well, that's comforting to know. Everyone is so worried about eating too much fish, because of the possible toxicity level of Mercury. Never did I think I would have to worry about my freaking Mascara, Eyeliner or Eyeshadow. Let me highlight the first sentence again "Readily absorbed through the skin" Umm..So what your saying is, Eyeliners and Eyeshadows containing this hidden chemicals are being ABSORBED into my skin and can cause some serious damage? Great! Come to find out that's not the only chemical the cosmetic industry isn't telling you about.

Other Ingredients in Mascara

Guanine- A color additive for cosmetics that must be extracted from fish scales.

Coal Tar Dyes – (includes D&C Blue 1, Green 3, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 33, etc.) Even though their carcinogenicity has recently been proven, the 1938 Act includes a specific exemption for them. Severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, fatigue, lack of concentration, nervousness, increased risk of Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

Imidazolidinyl Urea- Is an antimicrobial preservative it acts as a formaldehyde releaser.
It can instigate immune system response that can include itching, burning, scaling, hives, and blistering of skin, or severe respiratory reaction. It has also been suspected to cause Gastrointestinal or liver toxicity hazards.

Now let's talk about Eyeliners. Eyeliners are made up of thickeners, such as wax, and plastic film formers that deposit the pigment onto the eyelid. Film formers can be acrylic polymers and PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone), classified by Environment Canada as a medium health priority.

Other Ingredients in Eyeliners

Aluminum and bronze powders- Used for color in most eyeliner products. Can cause cancer and are toxic to the nervous system.

Coal tar colours (FD&C Yellow 5)- The color additive is derived primarily from petroleum. Reputed to be a catalyst in hyperactivity/ADD, other behavioral problems, asthma, migraines, thyroid cancer, and lupus

Phenoxyethanol and propylene glycol- They are in liquid eyeliners as emulsifiers, can irritate skin.

Parabens(methyl, butyl and propyl)-Preservatives that can disrupt the human endocrine system.

BHA- Common preservative in eyeliners, is a probable carcinogen that can be absorbed through the skin.

Last but not least Eye shadows. Eye shadows are used for the colours they provide, but artificial colours like carcinogenic coal tar dyes are frequent allergens. One dye (As we have just discussed in the Eyeliner section of this piece) - FD&C Yellow No. 5 may also cause severe reactions in people allergic to aspirin, and is potentially toxic to the nervous system.

Other Ingredients in Eyeshadow(Powder, Cream and Glitter )

Powder

Talc and Powdered Silica- The main ingredient in many powdered eye shadows. Both talc and silica in powdered form can be carcinogenic when inhaled. Silica is also a respiratory toxin. Eye shadow may also contain dimethicone, a potentially harmful silicon-based polymer, which helps the powder stick to the eyelid.

Cream

Petrochemicals- It is like mineral oil, an allergen that can be toxic to the immune system, petrolatum, which can be contaminated with carcinogenic PAHS, and lanolin oil, an allergen that may contain pesticide residues.

Glitter

Aluminum or bronze- Finely ground particles of both of which have been linked with cancer and can be neurotoxic. In 2000, the Consumer Agency and Ombudsman in Finland tested 49 eye shadows and found that they all contained impurities of at least one of the metals lead, cobalt, nickel, chromium and arsenic. Researchers say the amounts could cause allergic symptoms in sensitive people, and, over the long term, could cause other people to become sensitive.

BHA- A probable carcinogen, is a preservative in a number of eyeshadows.

Parabens- Which can disrupt the hormonal system, are also common preservatives in mainstream eyeshadow products.

Bare Minerals Vs Healthier Mineral Make-up(Arbonne)

BARELY MINERALS AS I LIKE TO CALL THEM

What is really in Bare Minerals and how can it hurt you? The list of ingredients and possible effect are as follows:
  • Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide is a white pigment with a high reflective quality. Its opacity, or whiteness, is important to many industries and applications such as paint, plastics, paper products, sunblock, food, cosmetics, skin care and toothpaste. Artists will recognize this substance as the main ingredient in titanium white pigment. Continued exposure to high concentrations of ultra-fine particles of titanium dust are considered by some to be a health hazard.
  • Zinc Oxide
Zinc oxide is a mineral compound, white in color. It has anti-bacterial, UV-protection, and binding properties as well as a high refractive index. Often used as a source of zinc in the food industry, it can also be found in plastics, rubber, paints, batteries and glass. This is an FDA-approved additive and considered non-toxic unless it is burned and its fumes are inhaled.
  • Mica
Mica has a metallic quality that is highly prized. The largest deposits of mica are found in India, but mica can be found in smaller deposits all over the world. Its heat-resistant quality makes it useful as a replacement for glass when fire resistance is necessary. Mica, crushed into a fine powder, has been used for centuries as a pigment. There are concerns about mica having respiratory toxicity, but as of this writing there is limited evidence of this.
  • Iron Oxide
Iron oxides used in the cosmetic industry are actually synthetically created. This is a safety measure because it insures that ferric oxides and other impurities found in naturally occurring iron oxides are not included in the final product. These synthetically created oxides are non-toxic and moisture-resistant. Other types of iron oxides are used in ceramics and pigments and labeled as raw and burnt sienna and umber. These are often referred to as ochers.
  • Bismuth Oxychloride
Bismuth oxychloride is a compound of bismuth and generally used in the cosmetic industry. Bismuth is a metal considered a safer alternative to lead. Bismuth is usually found as a byproduct of processing other metals and ores such as tin and copper but it must be refined several times before it is safe for human use. Of all the ingredients used in bare Minerals, this is the one that is a potential irritant to the skin and eyes if it is not manufactured properly. A poorly manufactured product is particularly problematic for those suffering with rosacea and other skin issues.
  • Corn Starch
A vegetable starch that has a shelf life.  It does not offer good adhesion and does not protect you from UV rays. Causes skin irritation and blocks pores. It is not suitable for acne-prone skin.
  • Zinc Stearate
Zinc stearate is a chemical substance that has a white, fluffy, powdered appearance and is usually formed from a combination of stearic acid and zinc oxide. It does not have a strong odor, although traces of a slight fatty acid scent are not uncommon. Zinc stearate is sometimes referred to as octadecanoic acid or zinc salt.
Since zinc stearate will dissolve in alcohol and not in water-based liquids, it is used in many different kinds of commercial products. Its ability to repel water also makes it suitable for many different kinds of applications.
  • Magnesium Stearate
This mineral is known for its matte finish appearance and high adhesion quality but has been associated with irritation in some with sensitive skin.
  • Methylparaben and Propylparaben
A class of chemicals widely used as preservatives by cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution, makeup, and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives.
As preservatives, parabens are common to most cosmetic products. There has been mounting evidence that parabens are carcinogenic and estrogenic with continued use. Parabens are estrogen mimickers that are easily absorbed into the skin.

Parabens have stimulated premature uterine growth in mice. Besides upsetting hormonal balance, the excess estrogenic effect is also linked to cancer. Laboratory testing has created cancer cells with parabens. So they're rightly considered carcinogenic.

They have a slew of anti-aging forces including polypeptides, buddleja davidii extract (which has wound healing phenylethanoids, antioxidant flavonoids like the powerful quercetin, and anti-inflammatory saponins) and marrubium vulgare extract, or white horehound, which also protects against UV damage. Additionally, they hold bragging rights to the anti-wrinkling sugar molecule ribose which prevents skin tissue breakdown. The tinted moisturizer also contains sodium PCA, a naturally occurring humectant which absorbs and locks in moisture from the air, and ethyl macadamiate, a plant based alternative to silicone from the fatty acid of macadamia oil. All great anti-aging and moisturizing ingredients expected from the botanically-based ethos of Arbonne.

Furthermore, tests were conducted to measure moisture and breathability, and they found that the moisture content increased 30% with the foundation and 57% with the tinted moisturizer and both were found to be as breathable as naked skin.

Latisse If You Dare

                                                                     Don't Believe the Hype

So, I've been watching the commericals for Latisse and well, if you know me then you know I don't need this product. If my eyelashes get any longer I'll be tickling my forehead when I blink. Anyways, let me get to the point. If you've watched the commerical then you may have noticed that every single person on it has light eyes. The warning on the product is so understated it cracks me up. According to doctors who prescribe this drug to patients they clearly state they would NOT prescribe the drug to people with light eyes or light colored skin, due to the fact that the drug changes the color of your Iris and the color of your eyelids. Um, what? So, if you hate your blue eyes and the color of your eyelids, by all means, use the product.

The active ingredient in Latisse is bimatroprost, which is responsible for the new growth of eye lashes.  It is the same ingredient in one of Allergan’s other drugs, Lumigan, which is used to treat glaucoma.  Doctors found that Lumigan caused their patients’ eyelashes to become lush.  In clinical trials, Allergan confirmed this finding and created Latisse, which according to the Company has "mild" side effects. The inactive ingredients in Latisse include benzalkonium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate, dibasic, citric acid and purified water.

“It is also possible for a difference in eyelash length, thickness, fullness, pigmentation, number of eyelash hairs, and/or direction of eyelash growth to occur between eyes. These differences, should they occur, will usually go away if you stop using LATISSE(TM),” as further stated in the drug literature.
The side effects listed are:
  • Turning patients’ irises brown.
  • Darkening of the eyelid.
  • Hair growth wherever Latisse “comes in repeated contact with the skin surface.”
  • Contamination of Latisse or its drug applicators, potentially causing bacterial infection.
  • Absorption into soft contact lenses of the chemical benzalkonium chloride, which is contained in Latisse.
  • Redness of the eye, itching sensation at the application site, eye irritation, and dryness in the eye are some of the common side effects of using Latisse.
  • There have been cases of the lashes falling, may be due to being allergic to one or many of the ingredients, in which case, it is best to discontinue use and seek medical help
CONS
  • The product takes a long time to work, as long as 4 months, to see any noticeable results.
  • Once you stop applying Latisse, your lashes immediately go back their original state.

Well, that is comforting. So either you could look like a model or a freak.

FDA Approves Latisse?! Let me tell you a little something about the FDA.

The FDA also approves Mineral Oil. What is Mineral oil? It is a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Mineral oil is the leftover liquid, and because it is abundant, it is very inexpensive. In fact, it is more expensive to dispose of mineral oil because it's a toxic chemical, than it is to purchase it. So, they refine it and put in all of our products as FILLERS. Thanks FDA, glad you're looking out for us. Laughable.

What does Mineral Oil Really Do?

Mineral oil acts as a thin layer on the skin. It is difficult to absorb and clogs the pores, which slows the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Remember, the skin is the body’s largest organ and plays an important role in maintaining overall health! Once the oil is absorbed, it is broken down by the liver and passes through the intestinal tract, it will absorb all of the fat-soluble vitamins found there. It is essentially stealing important vitamins from the body, which the body will not be able to replace. This can eventually lead to nutritional deficiencies. Studies have also shown forms of pneumonia caused by mineral oil decreasing lung function, known as lipoid pneumonia. Because of these dangers, the medical community has condemned the use of mineral oil taken orally or as an ingredient in medications. And yet, it is in all of our products. From lotion all the way to cosmetics.

Now that you have things in perspective, let me ask you this. Would you feel better knowing you can still get an Eyelash Enhancing product that is safer and actually works? If you said Yes, Continue reading :)
